Tell Me More!

Q: When do you practice?

A: We practice on Monday afternoons from 2:45 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Shepherd of the Hills United Methodist Church in Sun City West. We begin practices for our Christmas concerts (typically two) which are performed in early December, right after Labor Day. We resume practices in early January and work on our Spring concerts (usually two) which are performed in late March or early April.

Q: I am a snowbird and don't arrive until early October. Can I still sing in the December concerts?

A: Generally speaking, yes. If a person misses 3 rehearsals for either the December or Spring concerts, at the Directors discretion, the singer may have to prove that he/she is prepared for the concert.  Some of our singers do not arrive at their winter homes until December or January. They sing only for the Spring concert.

Q: What type of music do you sing?

A: We sing a wide range of music from classical choral pieces to contemporary selections. We feel it is important for both our singers and our audiences to be exposed to a wide variety of choral music. Our Artistic Director, Ken Goodenberger, has extensive experience as a vocalist and director. Some selections chosen for our performances are somewhat challenging, others are simpler but equally beautiful.

Q: Tell me more about your singers. Are they all retired?  Have they done much singing in chorale groups before joining the Chorale?

A: We currently have about 80 singers. Most are retired or partially retired. Many have a long history of vocal performance. Several had (and still have) professional careers as music teachers, choir directors and performers. Others have had little chorale experience prior to joining the West Valley Chorale. Regardless of their background, all members share a love of chorale music and performing for public audiences.

Q: Is an audition required?

A: Yes. All prospective members are auditioned by Ken Goodenberger, Artistic Director. It is a very short, low-key audition. Our audition for the 2016 Spring season is by arrangement with Ken Goodenberger.  If you are interested in auditioning, visit our Contact Us page and let us know you would like to audition for the Chorale.

Q: I am used to singing in choruses that perform more often than twice a year. Has the Chorale considered expanding its performance schedule?

A: In addition to our traditional four performances (two in December and two in the Spring), we look at the possibility of expanding our performance schedule to include special performances at other times in the year.  Our 2015-2016 season will have three additional performances - a special free "thank you to the community" in May, 2015, a  special WVC benefit concert in March, 2016 and a special concert with the Grand Canyon University music program in April, 2016.

Q: Sounds interesting. How can I audition for the Chorale?
